Want to ensure you don't spend a fortune on maintaining and replacing your security lighting system by your front door? You could try using GU10 energy saving lamps, as these are a powerful source of light and have a long lifespan compared to other types of bulb.
Natalie Timmerman, spokeswoman for Light IQ, pointed out the importance of having a handy light source near the entrance to your home - especially at this time of the year.
"Consider you are arriving home after a day at work, it can sometimes be a fumble for your door keys and a guestimate of where the lock is if you do not have enough immediate light," she said.
"It is highly important that a light source is available at the front door in the correct position, firstly to see your way in, and secondly to prevent unwanted callers attempting to enter your property."
Homeowners can add LED energy saving bulbs to their security measures, as having lights fitted to the exterior of your property can act as a deterrent to would-be burglars.
"If exterior security floodlights are fitted, it is important to incorporate the facility of over-riding them when not required, so that the more comfortable decorative lighting is not spoiled," Ms Timmerman added.
Her comments follow police in north east Derbyshire issuing a warning to householders to secure their home against break-ins after a number of opportunist burglaries were reported.
Inspector Glenn Hoggard commented: "People across the county are inadvertently helping burglars every day by advertising their home and the property inside. Most burglars are opportunist thieves and will only break into your house if it looks inviting and a dark home is inviting."
He advised residents to use a timer to switch on lights if they are going to be out during the evening and to install outside lighting that illuminates the front, sides or back of the house when a motion sensor is tripped.
