Energy efficiency 'is the way forward for Britons'

Energy efficiency 'is the way forward for Britons'

9th February 2012

British consumers and companies have been told it may be in their best interests to pay more attention to the role energy efficiency can play in their future success.

The new energy and climate secretary Edward Davey has spoken in public about the launch of the new Energy Efficiency Deployment Office and he used the opportunity to talk about exactly what benefits the reduction of harmful emissions can bring.

He noted that becoming leaner in terms of power consumption is the cheapest way to cut carbon output and, in the long run, will help people to slash their utility bills.

It is these factors that are behind the creation of the new office and Mr Davey is hopeful it will have the desired effect. He said it is the first time that expertise on the subject of energy efficiency has been pooled and is available from a single outlet.

The government is aiming to cut energy usage by between a third and a half by 2050, meaning the greatest efficiency drive ever known in the UK is imminent.

One way to improve a property's performance when it comes to fuel is to invest in energy saving lamps and other similar technology designed to reduce consumption.

As well as the creation of the Energy Efficiency Deployment Office, the government is overseeing the launch of the Green Deal, which will incentivise home improvements that help to lower reliance on unsustainable power.

Mr Davey explained: "For families facing higher bills, more efficiency could make a real difference. Homes without insulation could save hundreds by getting lofts lagged and walls treated.

"For businesses, there are even bigger rewards on the table. But recent research suggests that when it comes to energy efficiency, too many executives lack confidence in the return on investment."

It appears the time for talking is over and the era of action is now upon us when it comes to tackling energy efficiency.
