Common types of energy saving bulbs
The two most common types of energy saving lamps are GU10 and MR16. The main differences between these two varieties of bulbs are the fittings they have and the voltage they operate on.
MR16 bulbs have two pin-like fittings and can run on 12 volts. Because of their low voltage requirements, they have to be accompanied by a transformer. GU10 bulbs have two knobbly cylindrical fittings and run on normal mains voltage of 240 volts.
There are also GZ10 bulbs, which are similar to GU10 varieties, except they have a square corner rather than a bevel around the base. This means they cannot be used in fittings designed for GU10 bulbs. However, GU10 bulbs can be used in either fitting.
Fluorescent lighting and LEDs
Energy saving lamps typically come in the form of compact fluorescents, otherwise known as CFLs, or LEDs, with the latter commonly used as spotlights or on strips.
LED lights are becoming increasingly popular in domestic and commercial environments because of their reduced running costs and the low levels of heat they generate compared to other forms of lighting. What's more, they can last up to 30 years under normal use.
